A drawing is a conversation about making.

A detail brings things that appear separately in a plan to the same scale: the support, finish, joint, fixing or edge of an opening. Before they are installed, a useful question is how they meet in the actual construction.

Start by locating the detail within the building and the drawings it refers to. An isolated section can be difficult to understand without the plan and a view of the location. Read them together without assuming that every image shows the very same junction.

Three questions before installation.

The first concerns geometry: are the relevant dimensions clear, and do they correspond to the conditions the team has checked on site? Discuss discrepancies before they become improvised solutions.

The second concerns interfaces: who resolves the junction between components, and how is the continuity of the specified layers maintained? The third concerns sequence: what must be installed, protected or inspected before the next operation conceals that location?

Reading an example: M22.

The M22 folio brings together a ground-floor plan, a longitudinal section and an envelope detail. They move from the organisation of the house to a part of its construction. Photographs separately record surfaces, materials and moments during the work.

These documents are neither an as-built survey nor universal installation instructions. The actual solution depends on the project, components and checks by the responsible team. This way of reading is intended to make the questions visible in time.
